October book: When a Heart Turns Rock Solid, at ... ?

Just in time for Columbus Day, John "hosts" this month's book, a non-fiction saga of three Puerto Rican brothers' lives on and off the streets of Springfield MA. Author Timothy Black is a sociologist at the Univ. of Hartford. He met this family when the boys were in middle school and has followed/befriended/studied them for 20 years. The back cover promises "profound lessons regarding the intersection of social forces and individual choices [...] on the social and economic margins." It is a remarkable book about people and places you will most likely recognize. I encourage all to read at least some of it.

This slice of life book captures Judd in mid life with a failing marriage, a dysfunctional family and the death of his father. Often laugh out loud hilarious. It is a characature of people we know and could be a screenplay of a TV sit com.
